Singles: Lindsay Davenport |
Doubles: Anna-Lena Grönefeld / Meghann Shaughnessy |
In the final, 29-year-old Lindsay Davenport from Laguna Beach, California, USA, defeated 25-year-old Francesca Schiavone from Milan, Italy, 6-2, 6-4 .
Lindsay said: "I think the difference in the second set was once I got broken to 2-2 I felt like [Francesca] played with a little bit more confidence. The balls were definitely coming a little bit harder and deeper. She wasn't really allowing me to be inside the baseline as much as I was in the first set. I didn't play a great game to get broken, but overall I got it back together at the end and obviously I'm happy to come out with a victory."
Francesca said: "In the second set I tried to serve better and to do better with my return, and make [Lindsay] play what she doesn't want. I tried to run faster, but it's not easy when she hits the ball with such good timing... Maybe at the start was not so wonderful because it is difficult to feel how she plays. It's okay. Maybe next time I can do a little bit more to try to win the most important points."
In Doubles: Anna-Lena Grönefeld and Meghann Shaughnessy won the title by defeating Yan Zi and Zheng Jie 6–3, 6–3 in the final.
