- a reminiscence in Bali's Tennis Tournament history
Over 10 years
I had the pleasure and honour to help organize or just play a series of Tennis
Tournaments held in Bali. Special to my heart will always be that I was part of the team that organized the WTA Tournament hosted in Bali from 2001 to 2011. First as Wismilak International and later ended as Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions. Not lesser
in importance to me was the pleasure of organizing the annual Rotary Tennis
Tournament. A charity event sponsored by the Rotary Club Nusa Dua (2002–2010)
and Rotary Club Benoa (2011). The proceeds during my tenor as Tournament Director, were given to Yayasan Senyum Bali(Cleft lip surgeries of
Bali Children) and Bali Kids Foundation. Last but
not least it was always great fun to play in the locally organized tournaments
like the BIWA-, Canggu Classic-, PT Bali Tennis-, Tournaments. This
Archive features images from most of those events I have collected. Some of the
images presented are from other tournament participants or simply collected
online. Please feel free to contact me if you have photos and/or stories which
you would like to have published and added to the tournament pages of this Archive. This Archive
should be reminiscence of all those wonderful memories. I hope you enjoy it.
During the period 1994–2006 it was known as Wismilak International, organized successively in Surabaya (1994–1997), Kuala Lumpur (1999–2000) and Bali (2001–2006). The tournament was played on outdoor hardcourts.
The
Commonwealth Bank Tennis Classic was the Wismilak International under a new title sponsor. It was played at the tennis courts of the Grand Hyatt Bali in September, right after the US Open. In 2009 the tournament was replaced with the Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions.
The Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions was a singles-only tennis tournament that was played on indoor hard courts. It was part of the WTA Tour. It was held at the Bali International Convention Centre in November.
The Rotary Tennis Bali Tournament was a charity event played on the tennis courts of some 5-star rated hotels in Nusa Dua. During its 20+ years in existence, it was Bali's most popular tennis event for the local community. The tournament attracted players from many other countries as well.
In May 2008, the Canggu Club joined forces with the YAK magazine and created The YAK Canggu Classic Open Tennis Tournament. A later title sponsor was Bank Mandiri. It was played on the tennis courts of the Finns Recreation Club (Formerly Canggu Club).
The PT Bali Tennis Tournament was an event to promote Tennis in Bali and particularly Junior Tennis. The tournament was played in May 2017 on the clay courts of the Prama Sanur Beach Hotel.
The BIWA Tennis Tournament was a Charity event introduced to the local Tennis Community by BIWA Bali, an international women's community dedicated to social causes and fun.
The Liga Tennis Open is a tournament open for all levels of competitive players organized by Liga Tennis in Bali. The inaugural event was held in 2019.
