Rotary Tennis Bali
Tournament was a charity event
played on the tennis courts of some 5-star rated hotels in Nusa Dua. Jo Rosarius and Wes Nieman joined together with then local tennis pro Craig Marshall to raise money to help needy children on Bali. That first tournament was held in 1991 when Rotary Club Bali Nusa Dua was still a provisional club. In 2001 Craig Marshall handed the
tournament over to me. With the support of Craig in the early years and Rotary
Club Nusa Dua Members like Mercia Inkiriwang (Mimi), Jo Rosarius, Jeff Matthews
and Peter Richter we formed a very successful tournament committee to grow the players
participation. With the help of
the Internet, promoting the tournament with a website, starting in 2005, we could attract
players from many other countries to come visit and play in the tournament. To grow from 100 to well over 200 entries in the time frame of 2002 to 2010. What we could have achieved using the social platforms available
nowadays, one could only imagine.
The Rotary Tennis Tournament featured Open-, Amateur-, Junior- and Senior Divisions, played in Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles draws. During the steady growth in player entries, the tournament had to spread its matches starting at two sites to five sites in the Nusa Dua area. All Semi finals and Finals were played at the then 4 outdoor courts of The Westin Resort Nusa Dua. The tournament concluded there with the prize giving ceremony to hand out well over 50 give away prizes to the lucky winners of the players favorite Lucky Draw. Prizes like higher value hotel vouchers and airline tickets were auctioned out to increase the proceeds of the event for the named charity organization.
