On Sunday in the final of the Wismilak International in Bali, 2nd-seeded 19-year-old Svetlana Kuznetsova of St. Petersburg, Russia (ranked # 6 this week after her US Open victory, but still # 9 on the Bali drawsheet-- draws use 1-week-old rankings) defeated 24-year-old # 71 Marlene Weingartner of Germany 6-1, 6-4. Svetlana said: "It was tough to go all the way through after coming from the U.S. Open... I played well the first set, but Marlene couldn't find anything to play against me. In the second set she played better. She ran much more, but I was still making her run to see if she could handle it." US Open champ Svetlana and Marlene had played only once before, last year on carpet indoors at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow, where Svetlana won, 6-2, 6-4. Svetlana also reached the doubles final, teamed with her former partner Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, who came partly out of retirement this year to play doubles in a few tourneys. But Svetlana and Arantxa were defeated by Anastasia Myskina & Ai Sugiyama 6-3, 7-5.
