THE ARCHIVE- a reminiscence in Bali's Tennis Tournament history
Over 10 years
I had the pleasure and honour to organize or just play a series of Tennis
Tournaments held in Bali.
Special to
my heart will always be that I was part of the team that organized the WTA Tournament hosted in Bali from 2001 to 2011. First as
Wismilak International and later ended as Commonwealth Bank Tournament of
Champions.
Not lesser
in importance to me was the pleasure of organizing the annual Rotary Tennis
Tournament. It was always great fun to play in the locally organized tournaments
like the Rotary-, BIWA-, Canggu Classic-, PT Bali Tennis- and the Liga Tennis
Bali Open.
This
Archive features images from most of those events I have collected. Some of the
images presented are from other tournament participants.
Tennis is a sport that needs physical fitness including very good flexibility, agility, coordination, endurance, strength and perfect mental conditioning. You need to develop all these aspects of your body to play the best tennis.
Most historians believe that tennis originated in northern France in the 12th century, but the ball was then struck with the palm of the hand hence the name jeu de paume ("game of the palm"). It was not until the 16th century that rackets came into use, and the game began to be called "tennis." It was popular in England and France, although the game was only played indoors where the ball could be hit off the wall. Henry VIII of England was a big fan of this game, which historians now refer to as real tennis.
